The 5-star Anantara Veli hotel, located on the island of Veligandu in the Maldives, is launching a package which offers the possibility of staying there ALL of 2021 for 25,000 euros. The package includes accommodation in a bungalow suspended above azure waters for two people throughout the year, breakfast, and airport transfers, LadBible reported on November 13.

While the price is likely to deter many, it is clearly a bargain for the service offered. It is indeed much cheaper to choose this option than to rent another second home for a year. Indeed, this amounts to paying for a year 68 euros per day spent in this idyllic complex for two people… instead of 830 euros per night in normal times.

The offer is part of the Maldives government effort to encourage more tourists to return at this time of the pandemic. The economy of the Maldives is particularly dependent on tourism, and the year has been particularly difficult for its industry.

The fact that this is an isolated archipelago in the Indian Ocean and most tourist accommodation is on islands and private accommodation has certainly helped contain the spread of the virus in the Maldives. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the Maldives has recorded 12,085 cases of the virus and 41 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
